Rainbow beach & Fraser Island

Rainbow beach is a small town. When I asked for a map at the reception of Dingo’s Backpackers she gave me a map with basically 4 main streets where are an IGA, two hostels which are adjacent, some small shops and the beach. The beach is quite nice for lounging.

The day before going to Fraser Island, we had a meeting with all the people who booked the trip. I met the people from my group and we watched a long video of prevention. The guy who owns the campground was there for prevention too. Basically, what came out was:

• Don’t go to the ocean, sharks will attack you and, YOU WILL DIE

• Never be alone, dingoes are dangerous and will attack you and, YOU WILL DIE

• Don’t go further than the mark on the cliff, you will fall and YOU WILL DIE ; and if you don’t, shark will eat you anyway YOU WILL DIE

• Don’t dive in the lake, it’s too shallow, you will break your neck and… YOU WILL DIE

• Be careful where you step because of goannas, snakes, spiders… YOU WILL DIE!!!

That was a pretty scary meeting. We joked about it the next 4 days!

The following day, we began our 3 days/ 2nights in Fraser Island. With my seven group mates we were in the leader 4WD with Dave our guide. We had fun with him; he is a really nice guy. We spent the first afternoon at Lake McKenzie, an amazing lake!

The first night, people were incredibly drunk. Loads of dares and half-naked people! With Lea and Melanie, we went to the beach to take pictures at night. At one moment, I saw a dog's shadow. It was of course a dingo. Calmly, we walked away and join the group of people nearby. Because of the meeting the previous day, we freaked out! A few minutes later with Lea we had fun taking night pictures and light writing.

The second day we went to Indian head. It’s a high cliff from where we saw sharks and a turtle. Then we went to Champagne pools. There are natural pool formed by rocks and with the wave crashing to the rocks and going to the pools, it makes bubbles. That is why they call it “Champagne pools”.

After Lunch we went to the Maheno wreck for a taking some photos and we spent the rest of the day at Eli creek. It’s beautiful again, and you can drink the water from the creek (from the beginning of the creek, not the end!!).

Some of us asked Dave to wake us up for the sunrise. So, our last day we woke up at 5.30am! We were 11 watching it from the Pinnacles, were the aboriginals women talk about secret and how stupide men are!!! Just joking… ;) Again a nice moment! Then we left the camp ground and spent our last moments in this island at Lake Wabby (I’m not sure it’s that one…). A nice Lake surrounded by a huge sand dune. Some of us were brave and rolled from the top to the water. That was Dave’s style, the “crispy sausage “! At one moment, guys were fighting like kids then playing rugby in the water. Thanks to them I burst out laughing!!

We were a really good group. With awesome people & guide! I really recommend you to do it, whatever you pay, do it! Of course in winter it would be cheaper but the weather can be shit. Anyway if the weather is not good, you are not made with sugar and nobody can control Mister Weather, just enjoy the time you have there, it’s good fun!

Back in Dingo’s Backpacker, we had a nice live music night and a drink with Dave. He offered us Dingo juice to drink. I think it’s better not to know what is inside!! Anyway it was good.

Last day in Rainbow beach with some people of my group and Dave, we went feeding dolphins. Thanks a lot again to Dave!! The afternoon, I went to the beach and to Carlo Sandblow for sandboarding with some girls. There are more things to do in Rainbow Beach than I thought…

Good place, good people, good fun!

Now I’m in Airlie beach waiting to do my day trip at the Whitsundays…

Rainbow Beach est une petite ville. Quand j'ai demandé une carte à la réception de Dingo’s Backpackers elle m'a donné une carte avec essentiellement quatre petites rues où se trouvent un IGA, 2 auberges qui sont voisines, quelques petits commerces et la plage. La plage est très agréable pour se prélasser.

Le jour avant d'aller à Fraser Island, on a eu une réunion avec toutes les personnes qui ont réservé le voyage pour le lendemain. J’ai rencontré les gens de mon groupe et on a regardé une longue vidéo de prévention. Le gars qui possède le terrain de camping était là pour de la prévention aussi. Fondamentalement, ce qui en est sorti était :

• N’allez dans l'océan, les requins vont vous attaquer et vous mourrez

• Ne soyez jamais seul, les dingos sont dangereux et vont vous attaquer, et vous mourrez

• N’allez pas plus loin que la marque sur la falaise, vous tomberez et vous mourrez ; et si vous ne mourrez pas les requins vont vous manger de toute façon, vous allez mourir

• Ne pas plonger dans le lac, il n’est pas assez profond, vous allez vous casser le cou et vous mourrez

• Soyez prudent lorsque vous marchez à cause des varans, serpents, araignées ... Vous mourrez!

Ce fut une réunion assez effrayante. On a plaisanté à ce sujet les 4 jours suivants !

Le lendemain, on a commencé nos 3 jours / 2 nuits à Fraser Island. Avec mes sept compagnons, on était dans le 4x4 leader avec Dave notre guide. On s’est régalé avec lui, il est vraiment sympa. On a passé la première après-midi au lac McKenzie, un incroyable lac!

La première nuit, les gens étaient très soul.... Pleins de défis et de personnes à moitié nues ! Avec Léa et Mélanie, on est allée à la plage pour prendre des photos de nuit. A un moment, j'ai vu l’ombre d'un chien. C’était bien sûr un dingo. Calmement, On s’est éloigné pour rejoindre le groupe de personnes non loin. Mais à cause de la réunion de la veille, a quand même flippé ! Quelques minutes plus tard avec Lea on s’est amusée à faire des photos de nuit et de l'écriture avec une lumière.

Le deuxième jour, on est allé à Indian Head. C'est une falaise d'où on a vu des requins et une tortue. Puis on est allé à Champagne Pools. Il y a des piscines naturelles formées par des rochers. Et avec les vagues qui se brisent sur les rochers et se jettent dans la piscine, ça fait des bulles. C'est pour ça qu’ils appellent ça «piscine Champagne".

Après le déjeuner, on est allé à l'épave Maheno pour prendre quelques photos et on a passé le reste de la journée à Eli Creek. C'est beau encore, et on peut boire l'eau du ruisseau (au début de la crique, pas la fin ! ).

Certains d'entre nous ont demandé à Dave d’être réveillé pour le lever du soleil. Du coup, notre dernier jour on s’est réveillé à 5h30 du matin ! On était 11 à le regarder depuis Pinnacles, c’étaient là où les Aborigènes femmes partageaient leurs secrets, parlaient de la stupidité des hommes! Je plaisante ... ;) Encore un bon moment ! Puis on a quitté le camping et avons passé nos derniers moments dans cette île au lac Wabby ( je ne suis pas sûre que c'est celui-là ... ). Un beau lac entouré d'une immense dune de sable. Certains d'entre nous étaient courageux et ont roulé du haut de la dune jusqu’à l'eau. C'était un truc de Dave, il appelle ça la "saucisse de croustillant" ! A un moment, les garçons ont joué « à la bagarre » comme des enfants puis rugby dans l'eau. Ils m’ont régalé!

On était un super groupe. Avec des gens et un guide au top ! Je vous recommande vraiment de faire Fraser Island avec Dingo’s, peu importe ce que vous payez, faites-le ! Bien sûr, en hiver, ça sera moins cher, mais le temps peut être mauvais. Quoi qu'il en soit, si la météo n'est pas bonne, vous n'êtes pas fait avec de sucre et personne ne peut contrôler Madame Météo, juste profiter du moment que vous passez là-bas!

Retour à Dingo’s Backpacker, on a passé une bonne soirée avec musique live et on a bu un verre avec Dave. Il nous a offert du Dingo Juice. Je pense qu'il vaut mieux ne pas savoir les ingredients! Quoi qu'il en soit, c’était bon.

Dernier jour à Rainbow Beach avec certaines personnes de mon groupe, Dave nous a emmenés nourrir les dauphins. L'après-midi, je suis allée à la plage et à Carlo Sandblow pour faire du sandboarding avec des filles. Il y a plus de choses à faire à Rainbow Beach que je pensais finalement...
